For our Week 3 contest, we are trying limericks. Our subject is . . .
The life and loves of Philip Elton *
* What does that mean? You can write about Mr. Elton himself, or about his "romance" with Harriet or with Emma, his proposal, Harriet's doting on him, his departure... but I wanted to emphasize that this could be a broad topic about much of what has happened so far in the book, as long as it relates to Mr. Elton in some way. As always, no spoilers!!
Here's how we'll proceed:
By Friday morning* (11th February), please send your limerick to me at pemberley.laraine@gmail.com.
On Saturday morning, I post all the haiku in one post here.
By Monday morning, please send your vote for the best cinquain to me at pemberley.laraine@gmail.com
On Tuesday morning, I announce the week's winner.
*Morning is 9:00AM CST, i.e., GMT -6:00
A limerick is a five-line poem with a specific rhythm, rhyme scheme, and number of syllables per line, as follows:
Lines 1, 2, and 5 have seven to ten syllables and rhyme.
Lines 3 and 4 of Limericks have five to seven syllables and rhyme with each other.
The rhythm is an iamb follow by anapest(s), as in (stressed syllables in all caps)
Lines 1, 2, and 5: there ONCE was a MAN with a WIFE
Lines 3 and 4: he SPENT all his TIME
Variations on that form are completely acceptable, but please stay within the general form.
For example (I've never felt I could do this well, so bear with me):
There once was a young, wealthy woman
Who attempted arrangement acumen.
While making great matches,
With girlfriends as catches,
She found in the end she was human.
