We are told......   Written by Reeba (2/8/2011 4:34 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, About that riddle, penned by SusanH
Are you new?

in CH:1;

"......for having been a valetudinarian *all his life*, without activity of mind or body..."

I think the idea that he got around is ruled out by his lack of activity of body and mind.

I'm no expert, but I'm not sure if syphilis can be considered a 'constitutional disease', because its his constitution that was not strong.

Valetudinarian means: weakly, sickly, infirm of health (Johnson's dictionary)

It doesn't say - suffering from a disease.
