This riddle can be seen as a suggestion that Mr. Woodhouse (in his youth) got around quite a bit and now suffers from syphilis. His strict adherence to a light diet and continual fear of the cold are in line with treatment of the day for such an ailment.


I see this as the sort of twisted humor that JA is a master of, but I suspect I am in a minority.
