I would think that JA, and her readers at the time, would have been very familar with this riddle, and its racy overtones. I would have to guess that she is using it with a wicked sense of fun/irony. Perhaps "Aunt Jane" was not so very prudish ;o)

Unfortunately, the good humored "poke" is lost somewhat on her current audience...LOL except for the Janeites such as you SusanH!
