that it is more of the first than the second explanation- since Mr Woodhouse is gallant and loves to have ladies respected, he would never knowingly repeat something that was untoward to Harriet and Emma. I think the humour lies in the fact that he so taken with this riddle, but would in fact be a little more than embarrassed if he knew how it continues...
