I hadn't noticed how long it had been...   Written by Christopher (2/7/2011 1:24 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Bates – Living up to Reputation, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

... since Mr. Bates had died. Emma never really knew Mrs. and Miss Bates when they had money:

"when at three years old, on losing her mother, she became the property, the charge, the consolation, the fondling of her grandmother and aunt, there had seemed every probability of her being permanently fixed there, there had seemed every probability of her being permanently fixed there; of her being taught only what very limited means could command, and growing up with no advantages of connection or improvement"

I had never really paid attention to the timing until this read. Perhaps Emma might have felt differently if she had known them well before their fall.
