Inclined to agree though...   Written by BarbaraB (2/7/2011 10:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, John Knightley and Mr Elton, penned by Nikki N
Are you new?

...I think I can see where Robbin is coming from. You're right, Mr. Elton does act differently when around women. I do believe, however, that when he is trying to position himself to make a favorable marriage, as we see with Emma, his behavior goes overboard, so sycophantic and groveling, as to become a negative, which is a clue to his basic character.

]...what annoys me is that Emma fails to notice any sign that Elton was courting her and not Harriet.

I totally agree with this. Not only does she fail to notice the signs, she ignores the signals her own personal intellect is giving her as well as the warnings of both Knightley brothers. She is so on a mission to make this match that all internal alerts from reasoning/intellect as well as external warnings are discarded because they are impediments to the ultimate goal. Obviously, never a good thing.
