Emma and Lady Cat   Written by Nikki N (2/5/2011 6:40 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Harriet and the Martins, penned by Bridget D
Are you new?

you're right, Emma is almost like a junior Lady Cat in the making in some of her snobbish and condescending attitudes in these chapters! Emma is snobbish towards the Martins but charitable to the poor cottagers -- well, in P&P, Lady Cat was also concerned about her cottagers, and when Mr Collins reported to her that any of them were quarrelsome or too poor, her ladyship would sally forth to settle their differences and scold them into "harmony and plenty". And Harriet's silliness has some resemblance to Mr Collins' stupidity.

Although not exactly the same, Emma and Harriet's unequal relationship is rather closer to that of Lady Cat and Mr Collins, instead of to the friendship between Darcy and Bingley.
