Harriet's talk   Written by Bridget D (2/5/2011 6:27 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I wouldn't minimize the importance..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

I dont see that. Emma is not a Lady Catherine who only wants fulsome praise from her Mr Collins. we know she encourages Harriet to talk about her life and her impressions and is amused by Harriet's naieve persepectives. so it is not wonderful that she should talk to her mentor, and not being very clever she parrots the conventional ideas that women should marry, that an "old maid" is a terrilble fate etc. Mr K's ideas on EMma marrying are not the same - he clearly thinks that an attractive intelligent well dowered girl like Emma is harldy likely to be on the shelf unless she really wants it and that Emma loving to be "busy" and have a role in society, is not likely to pass up the role of married lady... adn he is aware that Emma doesn't have the sort of mental resources that she thinks she has.. she's intelligetn, but she's not likely to be kept happy in her spinsterhood by serious reading and accomplishements....
