Are you new?

I am not certain 'encouragement' is anything other than Harriet's sweetness and blushes, which we have also seen her bestow on Mr. Elton (and Emma, if it comes to that).

Emma sees encouragement from Mr. Elton to Harriet, too, and vice versa. SHE thinks she has reason to discount Mr. Knightley's assertion that Harriet encouraged Mr. Martin.
