same way as Emma is judging Robert Martin.

Mr Knightley doesn't know Harriet personally.

>she is also to be pitied because she lacks the skills to fight against Emma's extremely clever influence.

Emma's clever influence is her high position and money which is guiding Harriet's intelligence (she has some of that, I'm certain) IMO.

Emma is a stepping stone for her.
Not saying that Harriet is being clever and calculating about it.
She doesn't have to be, because the 'stone' is being laid before her conveniently.
She's just stepping on it at the cost of her conscience, loyalty and good sense.

Total blame could be laid on Emma if there was no Robert Martin/Martin family/sisters involved.

Their involvement makes it a matter more of her heart and feelings and less of her brain.
