Mr Knightley would have known her for a long time   Written by Tom P2 (2/2/2011 6:05 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mysterious Mrs. Woodhouse, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Mr Knightley would have known Mrs Woodhouse as a neighbour for 13 years or more. He speaks well of her, and notes Emma's resemblance to her (She inherits her mother's talents --ch5).

This is faintly reminiscent of Colonel Brandon and the two Elizas from S+S, but not under such intense and fraught circumstances.
