Are you new?

Mr. Knightley describes Robert Martin as a "respectable, intelligent gentleman-farmer" (8). I take it, though, that Robert is not a "gentleman" in the same sense as Mr. Knightley? What does this term mean?

I also wonder how much of the real physical labor of the farm he and his family did. But I think that belongs on L&T and I can take it there if need be. :-)
