Robert Martin rents his farm from Mr Knightley so of course they are well aquainted.
It was a gesture to let your Landlord know that you are thinking of getting married, and to ask advice.

"My only scruple in advising the match.."

Mr Knightley was a good landlord who looked after the people working on his land well.
