queen of HIghbury, is paying so much attention to her. Harriet seems like a very pretty girl of not more than average intellegence who is suddenly the object of Emma's need to find a way to pass the time by matchmaking. She does from time to time seem to be aware that she is does owe the Martins more loyalty (she is very effusive in her initial praise of the family) but Emma's criticism of the entire family (but especially the rival, Robert) makes her doubt her own ability to see their worth. AFter all, Miss Woodhouse is so grand that she couldn't possibly be wrong! But I can excuse Harriet's weakness more easily than Emma's persistent wrong-headedness in ignoring the evidence that the Martins are very respectable people who would be a good influence on Harriet.
