gentry   Written by Bridget D (2/1/2011 1:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I cannot accept that, penned by Ramya
Are you new?

Most of the people at the Assembly were gentlefolk, and since D had no title, he had nothing to distingusih hm from them other than his greater wealth and connextions.

And there was considered to be a rough equality among all the gentry in status, whether they were richer or poorer ones. The people of Meryton were offended becuase Darcy was not treating them with the respect that they deserved as fellow gentlefolk... nad having come to their assembly he was not partiicipating. Elizabet does not say to Lady Catherine "why shoudlnt' Mr Darcy marry me, Im just as good as he is", she says "there's no reason why we should not marry, I am a gentelman's daughter, just as he is a gentleman". If she had been a farmer's daughter, she would nto have expected to marry a Mr Darcy....

The Martins AREN'T the same class as the Knightleys or Woodhouses, they are not even "just below" in status. While Mrs Goddard gets invites ot Mr Woodhouse's table, sometimes, teh Martins would not...

Emma's views on teh Martins are nothing remarkable. Nobody would expect a farming family to have teh same social graces or education as a gentry family. Where Emma is wrong is in trying to dissuade Harriet from marryign Robert on the grounds that he's not genteel enough for her and she can hope for a gentleman to marry her....
