Miss Bates entertains Mr. Woodhouse...which you must grant has to be a relief to Emma; just as Mr. Knightly's visits helps to ease the tediousness of Mr. Woodhouse.

Emma certainly is a good daughter, and cares very much for the comfort of her father. Miss Bates provides company for her father, and Emma may not dance--but she can certainly "zone out" for awhile.
