I cannot accept that Written by Ramya (1/31/2011 3:15 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The concept..., penned by Reeba

the concept of snobbery did not exist. Why else would the worthies of Meryton be offended at Darcy's behavior at their Ball? It may have been a "fact" that he belonged to a class above many of them, but it was also a fact that he behaved in a rude and ill-mannered way that evening.

We don't use 18th century English when discussing Austen, after all, so I don't see why we cannot use the word "snob" to describe Emma's behavior. :-)
