Like Father, like Daughter

in consequence of the missive, Isabella's character, penned by Anne-Marie
She [Isabella] was not a woman of strong understanding or any quickness; and with this resemblance of her father, she inherited also much of his constitution; was delicate in her own health, over-careful of that of her children, had many fears and many nerves, and was as fond of her own Mr. Wingfield in town as her father could be of Mr. Perry. They were alike too, in a general benevolence of temper, and a strong habit of regard for every old acquaintance. (11) Isabella’s willingness to indulge in “a nice basin of gruel” (12) with Mr. Woodhouse suggests she may share his delicate stomach which can “bear nothing rich (2). It is also noteworthy that she has delivered five children into the world (11). I agree it was probably too late for Miss Taylor to much influence Isabella out of the natural inclinations she inherited from her father. Isabella may be at home much as we see her at Hartfield. I think John’s comment “My dear Isabella… Be satisfied with doctoring and coddling yourself and the children” (12) may be insensitive but has a ring of truth about her habits. (:D)
