the world outside of Highbury. Was there any mention of her visiting her sister in London? If there was, I must have missed it. She seems to base her pronouncements on what she sees in Highbury -- Miss Bates is liked in Highbury, so she must be the exception to the rule. I do not feel this is a social satire in the tradition of P&P and Thackeray's Vanity Fair, although I am always open to the possibility I am incorrect.
