Miss Bates & the Letter   Written by Robbin (1/31/2011 9:11 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Bates first words?, penned by Tarn
Are you new?

"I suppose you have heard of the handsome letter Mr Frank Churchill has written to Mrs Weston? I understand it was a very handsome letter, indeed. Mr Woodhouse told me of it. Mr Woodhouse saw the letter, and he says he never saw such a handsome letter." (2)

I agree with your reasoning in choosing Mrs. Bates as the authoress of the above comments and thank you for it. My focus is Miss Bates this group read and having already read the chapters for this week I was surprised that we have yet to hear from her directly. We hear Mr. Woodhouse speak of Frank Churchill’s marvelous letter in Ch. 11:

"But you should tell them of the letter, my dear," said her father. "He wrote a letter to poor Mrs. Weston, to congratulate her, and a very proper, handsome letter it was. She shewed it to me. I thought it very well done of him indeed." (11)

So if we are right and it was Miss Bates in Ch. 2 this illustrates that she is a reliable repeater of what others have said which for me and my focus is a good thing to know. (:D)
