When Emma says “must be” and “guess” it sounds to me like she is making assumptions and asserting them as facts because she believes her own propaganda. Sorry, I don’t how to reconcile your statements “Emma's assertions (which she doesn't really believe in)” and “Emma's technique which doesn't render her a liar IMO”. Are you saying she is fibbing only part-time? Emma does compare Mr. Martin to other gentleman sometimes but she also just criticizes to run him down before Harriet. Such as continuing to insist he is illiterate against evidence, making a mountain out of the molehill of forgetting to purchase a book, claiming his sister must have helped him write the proposal letter because “There were not merely no grammatical errors, but as a composition it would not have disgraced a gentleman” (7). I have to disapprove. (:D)
