It's the degree.   Written by Reeba (1/30/2011 4:28 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Assertions Emma does not really believe?, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Mr Knightley thinks well of the family...Emma knows!

But they *must be* course and unpolished nevertheless.
'Well' for farmers, but unpolished and coarse when compared to genteel folks.

Mr Martin reads. He forgets to get a book. So he's not *that* interested, as a gentleman would be.

She has observed him to be neat and sensible....so she brings in a comparison with gentlemen like Mr Elton and Mr Weston.

These are a few examples to illustrate Emma's technique which doesn't render her a liar IMO :)

In fact every time she utters anything negative about Robert Martin it is along these lines...either she's comparing him with the gentlemen, or pointing out how he's not up to the mark of higher society.

Emma is certainly wrongheaded, but she's not putting down Robert Martin, rather she's raising the scales higher for comparison.
