Exactly. She's not condemning him as a person, she's just trying to detach Harriet frorm him and the easiest way is ot point out the sort of differences that there are, such as his being of a lower rank than "real gentlemen", that his manners are not the same, that if he forgot the books, it is becuase he doesn't care to read much. She's not saying he's a bad person - which MIGHT alienate Harriet....and which in justice to Emma I dont think she would do, but she's jsut stressig hte social differences....
