Do we have an idea what class the woodhouses were?   Written by Mieke (1/29/2011 7:37 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, We have to..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

I'm convinced they were part of the High(est) class for Highbury, but I wouldn't put them in the same (imo higher) class as P&Ps Mr Darcy, and not even near his aunts lady Catherine's league!

So that makes me wonder what class the Woodhouses were... Maybe lower upper class, if something like that exists... and as it seems thar are no higher class people living near highbury they are therefore the highest class in that area...

I do agree JA never writes much about the servants, unless they are important for her story. The assumption of her readers just assuming they had servants, because one had them at that time, makes sense too..

Mr Knightley seems a very good friend of the Woodhouses and to me it doesn't seem weird he just calls at their house, and is let in by a servant, but doesn't see a need for being announced being such a close friend of the family...

I hadn't noticed anything about servants/housekeeper so far, or even though they should be there at all, Iwill definetly keep an eye out for them being described...
Interesting point!
