servants   Written by Bridget D (1/29/2011 3:30 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Who at Hartsfield announced visitors??, penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

A butler woudl answer teh door, or otherwise a maid or footman. In Hartfield I dont see any mention of a butler.. I dont think that the woodhouses are quite that formal. THey live quietly, only seeing a few local people, and dont have parties as such. Probably a footman or maid would be the door answerer, but Austen does not as others have noted mention servatns unless they are needed for the plot. She jsut assume that her readers will know htat servants are here and there in the narrative....
