Class differences   Written by Ramya (1/28/2011 8:53 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, 21st Century Emma, penned by Sarah Yorkshire
Are you new?

I agree with you that it is wrong to vilify Emma just for being born into a higher status in society. As someone else pointed out, it is not as though Mr. Knightley dined with the Martins. Not do I think the Martins would socialize with someone from a class lower than theirs. People generally kept to their class, and there were people who moved up and down the ladder.

However, the problem with Emma is that she is ready to discount the true worth of people simply based on their class. No doubt there were many such people in those times, but we do not like to see such an attitude in the Heroine of the story... ;-)
