This is not the first time I have read Emma but I always   Written by AnnetteJ (1/28/2011 11:20 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Encouragement to persevere with Emma and not give up!, penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

have the same reaction to her snobbish attitude toward the Martins. At this point in the reading she comes across as primarily a spoiled, bored, poor little rich girl. The first time I read the book I kept telling myself that there has to be more to Emma than this, as IMO otherwise Austen would not have made her the heroine of the book. Let's face it -- few of us weep buckets for the plight of the idle rich! Maybe we would like to be in their position, but I think most of us would hope we would behave better than Emma is at the present time.
