but more unequable matches have been known. Since Mr. Elton was one of the three gentlemanly professions he probably would have been theoretically possible if Emma had been inclined. And since she had command of her own fortune there would be no problems on that score.


Bearing in mind that his eventual wife is a gentlewoman of fortune I suppose there should be no reason why Emma couldn't have wed him...
