Another view of Harriet's "Martin" stories   Written by Erica M. (1/27/2011 10:58 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Woodhouse was so great a personage in Highbury,, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

This is a very good point. We are getting everything filtered through Emma; who knows what she discounted as she listened to Harriet.

But even so, we know Harriet did mention the Martins' possession. Perhaps, though, she did so because it's what others do.

Without straying too far into Austenuations, in JA's other books we see many characters discuss the possessions and status of others, even those who aren't shallow or materialistic. Here we know Highbury is a gossiping town, and I'm sure if a neighbor got some new possession the entire town would be gabbing about it for days. It's possible Harriet is mentioning all this because she knows it's the "thing" when you're describing other people.

As you say, though, we must wait and see what Harriet has to say for herself. :-)
