It's a bit of a contradiction because she both looks down on them and admits she can do nothing for them because they don't need any help. They do sound like lovely people, and I think most of us would be happy if one of our friends married into such a family, but Emma wants Harriet to be exactly on her social level, and a woman of Emma's status would never marry a farmer.
