know. The fact that Emma looks down her nose at them and feels that they are unworthy says a lot about her -- and none of it is good. I guess we could excuse her because of her age and her lack of experience in the world, but it really borders on bigotry. I realize that we are looking at the work through 21st century eyes, but I think that the fact that Austen presents such a strong case for the worth of the Martin family indicates that she is not on Emma's side in this matter. She, the author, really is tempting us to dislike Emma.
