I like your ideas, mainly, but distance is not the only hardship in walking. We do not know how rough the roads are, nor how damp, chilly, or dusty they are. There might even be an unpleasantness with being a woman walking alone past stares and gawking, even if no one actually approached you.
Barring obstacles like that, though, I agree -- Emma does not seem to be a walker, a rider (I am sure her father would have a fit if she took up riding horses!), a reader, a needle-worker, or a diligent student. No wonder she needs a project for amusement!
