From Ch 1:

".....The backgammon-table was placed; but a visitor immediately afterwards walked in and made it unnecessary...."

Miss Austen at this point introduces Mr. Knightley into the story and he just walks in unannounced. Would not a gentleman, even one intimately connected with the Woodhouses, not wait for a servant to open the door and announce a caller?

Who was it, back then, that was responsible for tending the front door and announcing visitors?

Either Hartfield did not have such a servant or Mr. Knightley was expected/encouraged to just walk right in (!)
