that makes Emma's interference with Harriet so dangerous to both of them. Emma indeed regards Harriet not as a friend--an equal with whom she can share ideas & aspirations--but as a project, a thing to be improved, and even less, as a piece of her Marrying off Mr. Elton Project. Harriet's admiration of Emma makes her more vulnerable to Emma's maneuvering. Emma's objectification of Harriet is not a healthy approach to relationships.

She should have gotten a dog.
