perhaps, Mr. Knightley, like Fanny Price feels that "there may often be a great deal more suffered than a stander–by can judge of." And if Emma experiences romantic love for herself, she would better be able to understand the seriousness of the situation. Right now, it is like a game for her. Poor Emma must be really bored!
