The Woodhouses were first in consequence there.   Written by Stephanie (1/26/2011 5:02 p.m.)
Are you new?

*When the text says "All [in Highbury] looked up to [the Woodhouses]," is that the author talking or the character? We get the feeling that Mr. Knightley is of their social level, but he lives at Donwell. But we know that Emma has a certain self-confident air, probably more than is justified by her youth and inexperience. How do you read this? Truth? Or attitude?
