This is, however, very human. I mean, that Emma, who had decided that Mr. Elton 'needed' a wife, and is now on the lookout for one for him, finds herself interested in Harriet Smith as a project. Her first impulse, to find out her parentage, fizzles. Past unavailable, she turns to Harriet's future, and links her two interests!

By the way, when Emma finds that Harriet has found out nothing, she complacently thinks SHE would have discovered more...and then drops it. She does not follow up in any way, yet she thinks less of Harriet's intellect for her not doing so.
