..doubt of a return of love can cause considerable suffering, so yes, he's being harsh IMO.

This meting out a punishment "in his mind" to Emma is unfortunate as it makes me give him a minus point :).

Perhaps he himself has never been in love to know the true consequences of how it is in such a situation.
