in consequence of the missive, On My Own, penned by Eponine Thenardier
A correspondence between this gentleman and this lady by letter, could subsist only under a positive engagement, can be authorised by nothing else; however mysteriously they might wish to conduct the affair, your friend indeed must be engaged. This decides the matter; the missive is his alone, and should be delivered to him at once, not intercepted and retained by you or any other third party. As to yourself, I know well your situation, having struggled resolutely against the oppression of such feelings myself; I grieve that your friendship, so full of affection and confidence, has hazarded unsolicited tenderness, but you must not talk so despairingly. Have you no comforts? No friends? Is your loss such as leaves no opening for consolation? Much as you suffer now, think of what you would have suffered if the discovery of your friend's courtship had been delayed to a later period. Every additional day of unhappy confidence, on your side, would have made the blow more dreadful. Exert yourself, dear Eponine, if you would not kill yourself and all who love you.
