in consequence of the missive, The shadow within my breast, penned by David Copperfield
Blinded by youth and beauty, you have married an exceptionally dim-witted woman - from the sound of her she is rather less astute than Mrs Bennet, which I would hardly have believed possible - as many men have done before you, not least me, and no doubt as many men will do after you. Make the best of it. You are her husband, and it is not her fault that you were deluded. Take up reading and spend as much time as possible in your library. You express yourself with some fluency - perhaps you should take up writing. Find amusement in your wife's foibles, though as she seems to be a more fragile creature than Mrs Bennet do not ridicule her to her face. And stop hankering after Miss Agnes. It is none of your business who she marries, since you chose another, however much you may regret it now, and I suspect it is wise of her to distance herself from you now. You live in England and are only allowed one wife at a time, and if you make a mistake you are stuck with her. As I said, make the best of it.
PS I know exactly what your aunt meant.
