in consequence of the missive, Mr Rochester, penned by Jane Eyre (from Canada)
Dear Miss Eyre,
You sound rather distressed in your letter, but I hope that it is not as awful as it seemed at first. It is very unfortunate that you didn't know that the gentleman was your employer, but I am sure he will not hold a grudge against you. It was very lucky that you were not hurt. Carriages are dangerous things. I am glad my dearest father did not see your letter as he would be so very uneasy, especially any time I took a walk. I am tempted to give my advice, but your writing suggests you know you must be careful next time you take a walk.
Your pupil's pictures sound most intriguing and delightful. It might solve my problem with a sketch of my brother, Mr. John Knightley. I nearly finished his likeness, and very pretty it was, rather too handsome and flattering. Then my sister comes and tells me coldly that - "it is a little like -- but to be sure it does not do him justice". My sister is a sweet lady, but this has hurt my artist's pride.
I think I will draw an apple in his "little-like" likeness and tell everybody that it's an apple from Mr Knightley's orchard. I vow to never take another likeness, ever!
I hope you will find your position to your liking, Miss Eyre. Only to think that you are to your little pupil what my governess, my dearest Miss Taylor, is to me. We are the closest friends, now even closer since my sister's marriage.
If Miss Rochester's father is troubled or has a peculiar temper, you should try your best to be supportive and love her all the more for it. Such a child needs your affection, dear Madam. If Mr Rochester travels a lot, you might not see him a lot, all year long. However, I must say that it sounds very nice that he loves gods. Mr Knightley himself has a dog and he is his constant companion. People who like animals cannot be all bad.
Hope my letter improves your spirits a little.
