Dear Inspector Javert,
(O, how I admire those keepers of the law such as yourself, be it on land or on the seas! You all have more worth than any other set of men in England; or France, I suppose, in your case.) But I could not bear that you should be frightened from a duty by such nonsense. What! would I be turned back from doing a thing that I had determined to do, and that I knew to be right, by the airs and interference of such a person as Jean Valjean, or of any person, I may say? No, I have no idea of being so easily persuaded. When I have made up my mind, I have made it. You must be as firm yourself. Do not doubt yourself; you must and shall have your way, or else, as you say, there is no way to go on.
Miss Louisa Musgrove
(P.S. Speaking of reaching and falling, 'tis a delightful hobby to ease your mind and cares! There is nothing more delightful; particularly, I find, when I wander up on the high walks at Lyme and I may fall into my waiting captain's arms. Try yourself taking a little dash and leap from a ledge somewhere; there is nothing more fun in this world.)
