in consequence of the missive, There is nowhere I can turn!, penned by Inspector Javert
I sense that you are yourself so intimately acquainted with all the tenderest songs and all the impassioned descriptions of hopeless agony. You repeat with such tremulous feeling the lines which image a broken heart, or a mind destroyed by wretchedness. I must venture to hope that you do not always read (or speak in) only poetry, Monsieur Javert; those strong feelings which alone can estimate poetry truly are those very feelings which ought to taste it but sparingly. I recommend a larger allowance of prose in your daily study; stomach no rhyme, no epics; no sonnets and certainly no songs; therein lies the reprieve. Turn from the black and cold abyss that such lines create to our own best moralists, such collections of the finest letters, such memoirs of characters of worth and suffering, calculated to rouse and fortify the mind by the highest precepts, and the strongest examples of moral and religious endurances. There is the best tonic!
