Dear Lady Blakeley,
I too am wretched! Let us be wretched together! It is impossible to believe a woman of great sensibility, as your letter attests that you are, could be guilty of acts vile and horrid to turn Sir Percy against you. Had there been impropriety in your actions I am sure you would have been sensible of it for we always know when we are acting wrong, and with such a conviction you could have had no pleasure. You could have never fallen in love! The answer insidious is before us. You have been cruelly used but not by Sir Percy. Suspect evil of all your acquaintance than he who is your husband. As is evident in my unhappy situation it must also be in yours that a rival for Sir Percy’s affection has spread lies to ruin you in his opinion. No doubt my Elinor would advise you to exert yourself, to mitigate your misery but I am not so barbarous to recommend it. If you hide your wretchedness no one will perceive it. I believe a flower, the scarlet pimpernel, is of consequence to Sir Percy’s family. Take to wearing this favored flower, this loving tribute of your esteem and the constancy of your misery will invariably remember your virtue to his heart. Remember me in your bliss for mine is a misery which nothing can do away!
