in consequence of the missive, line, penned by Stephanie
I meant that the line doesn't 'translate' well onto screen. In the novel, I read those words from Mr Knightley as a clue from the author, to show readers how Mr Knightley is starting to think about Emma. The only adaptation I can recall clearly is the 1996 film with Gwyneth Paltrow, where Jeremy Northam almost *purrs* the line after a departing Emma, coming across like an old roué! I'm just not sure that line is necessary in adaptations, where the screenplay is always so much more direct - looks can express far more than words on screen, especially when there is chemistry between the leads.
