in consequence of the missive, I completely agree with..., penned by Reeba
E1 was the fourth acquision to my "Emma" DVDs, and my 12th of JA's stories adaptions. All in all, I think it fit that story the best. Miniseries tend to do so. However, I wish the casting department would have read the book! Harriet is supposed to be a pretty girl. This actress reminded me of a crude scale in the "degrees of ugly." She brought Toni Collette up to "one bag ugly" (for the part of a pretty girl, and as a redhead, was wrong for the part).
E2 was a box off movie, IIRC. As such, seem like most stories have to chuck story fidelity to get made, out and away from miniseries. I did chuckle when Frank Churchill first come upon Emma, stuck her gig in the middle of a creek. Not in the book.
E3 had the most likely fit to Emma, as far as appearance and poise. Mark Strong tried to make Mr. Knightley too much like a drill sergeant. Somehow, I think Prunella Scales made the most agreeable and fitting Miss Bates.
E4: What can be said about that that has not already been said in this long thread? Has anyone noted that Laura Pyper's big brown eyes were wrong for Jane Fairfax? Nice, but not canon.
