I really liked this version of Emma. It was the first that made me feel sympathy with Emma and her situation; that though she was mistress of Highbury, she was less mobile than almost all of the other characters.
I agree that Romola Garai's performance was of a less sophisticated Emma, and it did annoy me. But I think it was deliberate. My interpretation is that it shows how cut off Emma was from wider society, particularly London society, implying that her manners would have been more polished if she moved around more. I don't think it was a wholly successful portrayal, but I understand why they did it.
This does have a few of my favourite portrayals of characters. Great Mr Knightley, Mrs Elton, and Harriet. I also loved the chemistry between Emma and Knightley.
