Next message Bingley has a fortune of 100 thousand,

in consequence of the missive, Gentry/nobility, penned by Thérèse
Mr. Bingley inherited property to the amount of nearly an hundred thousand pounds from his father (P&P, ch. 4) Being in the nobility was not about having a lot of money; a tradesman could have more money that a nobleman. Even if Mr. Woodhouse had 200.000 pounds, it doesn't mean that he would be a nobleman. (And many rich gentlemen belonging to "ancient, though untitled families" considered themselves above "new titles of nobility"; so it's possible that Darcy wouldn't want a title.) Mary Musgrove disdains the Hayters because her father is a baronet.
