I remembered the situation, but your quote (thank you!) made me think about the Eltons's lame horse that delayed the Bow Hill party and led to the Donwell Abbey strawberry party : could not the Eltons hire a pair of post horses at the Crown?

Of course, they may have thought it was too material an expense for a mere country party.
Could there be another reason, or could it be just a choice from Jane Austen, to allow the party to go to Donwell?
